AXE exclusive U. of Mary Hardin-Baylor Head Coach Ben Shipp Earns 300th Career Win

We’d like to congratulate Coach Ben Shipp of AXE exclusive University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on his 300th career victory! Last Friday he led the now undefeated Cru baseball team (4-0) to the milestone win, which had never before been achieved at UMHB.

Coach Shipp began coaching high school baseball and football in 1980. In 1985 he took the position as head baseball coach for University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, until moving into UMHB’s Director of Athletics role in 1996 and later advancing to become the Vice President for Athletics in 2002. Under his guidance, UMHB won 17 conference championships, had 130 All-Americans and 38 Academic All-Americans. In the summer of 2012, Coach Shipp stepped down as Athletics VP to return to coaching.

Inspired by the great teachers and caretakers of the game, such as Ben Hines, Mark Johnson, Augie Garrido, Gary Ward, Jack Leggett, and Wayne Graham, Coach Shipp is committed to his craft and his players.

“I continue coaching because I love teaching baseball to these young players and seeing their excitement when it all begins to make sense to them,” says Shipp. “I love seeing a team come together in the spring and play as a single unit with team goals driving their commitment.”

Last season, Coach Shipp led the Cru to a 21-21 record, which earned them a berth into the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time in four seasons. The Cru went 10-8 in ASC West Division and were expected to return 13 letter winners from that team this year.

“Winning a playoff game in our first year was a thrill. I saw the confidence of our young guys go through the roof and they have carried that experience into this season,” said Shipp.

Among his most recent accomplishments, Coach Shipp was named Chairman of the NCAA Division III Baseball National Committee for the 2013-2014 school year and will continue on the committee through 2016.

"I am honored to serve Division III Baseball as the chair of the National Committee," says Shipp. "It is a privilege to work with 7 other representatives from across the country who lend their time and experience to putting together a great championship."
